Episode transcript:
Are there things in your life that you know deep down inside you can do, but it just feels impossible to make it happen? Have you ever wished that some things came more naturally to you? Or wish you could think or feel differently about certain things? Well, I'm here today to tell you that there is actually a way to do all of those things.
Hi everyone, my name is Adreanna. I'm a certified hypnotherapist and subconscious reprogramming expert and today, we're going to take a deep dive into the world of subconscious reprogramming. The truth is, we ALL have dreams and aspirations—but too often, due to our own subconscious limiting beliefs, we're held back from achieving them. So, we'll be exploring how our brains are wired to accept or reject ideas based on our beliefs and values. In this episode, we'll be talking about the different components of the human mind and how they influence our thoughts and behavior. We'll also look at how trauma or emotional experiences shape our view of ourselves and others, as well as how negative thinking can hold us back from achieving our goals.
By understanding the power of the subconscious mind, we can start to unlock the potential within ourselves and reprogram our brains to focus on what we want instead of what we don't. We'll discuss different methods for accessing the subconscious mind such as meditation and hypnosis, and how these techniques can be used to break free from self-sabotaging patterns.
Ok let's dive in!
How the subconscious mind forms
Have you ever been stuck in a pattern that you just couldn't break out of? Think about the time you realized you keep dating the same type of person over and over again. Or when you realized that you were never able to stick to a routine or goal. What about when you found yourself constantly worrying about the same things over and over again? Or when something keeps getting in the way of your success and you can't figure out why?
Well, it's likely that your subconscious mind is to blame.
And before we can understand why this is, first we have to understand how the mind works.
As we know, the human mind is incredibly complex but for the purposes of this conversation, it helps to break down into three parts – the subconscious, conscious and critical minds.
Let's start with the subconscious mind.
When we're born, we're born with just the primitive part of our mind. This is where our fight/flight/freeze instincts exist. And we're born with only 2 fears, the fear of falling and the fear of loud sounds. (Hint! That means that every other fear we have is learned at some point in our life)
The subconscious mind starts taking shape from the moment we're born until around the age of 8. During this time, it's like a sponge, absorbing information from our surroundings, experiences, and the people we interact with. This is when our brains are the most impressionable, where we form our values and beliefs based off of our parents, teachers, environment and life experiences. At this stage, we're just a sponge absorbing everything and everyone around us and creating meaning behind it. We're learning what things to say and what not to say. We're learning what things get us in trouble. We're learning what brings us love and approval. Essentially, we're the rules of life based on what we're individually experiencing.
So what kind of mental programming do we have embedded within us? Well, it can come from a variety of sources – our family, our upbringing, our environment, and even past traumatic events. And most importantly, its not just what happened to us but its the meaning we created around what happened to us. The emotions we felt around what happened to us. The beliefs we picked up around those events.
For example, a child could have been bit by a dog and was never comforted afterwards so they developed a fear of dogs. While another child could have been bit by a dog and were immediately consoled by a parent so they never developed a fear. So two of the same incidents happened, but only one developed into a negative subconscious programming based on the emotions and beliefs they picked up around the event.
Our knowns and unknowns
All of these experiences, memories, emotions, beliefs, meanings are all being recording into our subconscious mind and they're being stored as knowns or unknowns.
If we're experiencing physical touch as a form of love, it's being recording as a known into our mind.
If we're experiencing anger, and screaming, and yelling. That is being recording as a known into our mind.
If we're experiencing fear, or feeling like we're not good enough then that is being recorded into our mind as a known.
Now, unknowns are the information that we haven't been exposed to yet. This is like the things that don't quite make sense to us yet, or the things that we don't truly understand.
For example, if we experiencing anger and yelling at home, that is our known while calm and supportive communication would be an unknown, because we haven't experienced it yet.
How + why the subconscious mind holds us back
Another important thing to know about the mind is something called the pain/pleasure principle which states that our mind will always gravitate to pleasure and avoid pain.
But what is pleasure and what is pain to our minds? Our knowns and unknowns. Our knowns are pleasure to our mind because they are familiar. And the unknowns are pain to our mind because they are unfamiliar.
This is why it can be so hard to break out of patterns and habits because our minds are wired to move away from the unknowns which can prevent us from making real change and achieving our goals. EVEN IF its something that would be healthy for us or move us towards the things we want. Our mind will still move away from it because it is unfamiliar.
Perfect example is working out. Going to the gym is healthy right, so why is it that so many people start and stop that habit? Well it's because their mind has no knowns about choosing to go to the gym vs doing something else. So even know its healthy and probably aligns with a goal someone has, its unfamiliar to the mind so the mind feels pain, avoids pain, seeks out pleasure which is a known, which may be watching netflix on the couch.
This is how and why we start to see self sabotage behaviors play out.
So, when it comes to unlocking your potential and reprogramming the subconscious mind, it's important to understand that our thoughts, feelings and behaviors are largely shaped by the knowns we have stored in our brains.
And it's important to keep in mind, these subconscious programs are meant to protect us. The brains one and only job is to protect us, and that's what it's attempting to do by gravitating towards situations it knows. However, this can also hold us back from achieving the things we want in life or making the changes that we want.
Okay so that's the 4-1-1 on subconscious mind.
The critical mind
Then we have the critical mind. This forms from ages 8-9 and it starts to filter and evaluate the information it receives. Think about kids this age and how they start questioning everything.
Does this make sense to me? They start to gravitate towards things they like and things they don't.
This critical mind will continue to act as our filter as we age. It's a barrier between the subconscious mind and the conscious mind because think about it. Imagine if everything we were hearing, seeing, thinking experiencing, were just directly going into our subconscious mind? We would be so out of control. So this critical mind is a protective barrier our mind has to protect us. Its like is this information relevant to me? Does it match my knowns? Okay cool let's move forward. No? Okay let's forget that information then, it's not important.
The conscious mind
And then finally, our conscious mind. Between the ages of 9 and 12, our conscious mind begins to form, allowing us to make deliberate decisions. Our conscious mind is our logic, reasoning, will power, decision making, and our ability to analyze.
The conscious mind is our rational and logical side of the brain where we make decisions from. This part of our brain is responsible for planning and problem-solving, as well as making choices that align with our values and goals for the future. The conscious mind helps us stay present in the moment and think rationally about a situation instead of letting our emotions take control.
The conscious mind is the part that decides it wants to loose weight, or it wants a healthier relationship, or better friendships.
Why we have trouble making changes in our life
Now, here's where things get interesting.
The subconscious mind ultimately ends up controlling 88% of what we think or do while the conscious mind controls 12%.
Gasp. Mic drop. WHAT.
I remember learning that and was like you're kidding me.
Our subconscious mind, which accounts for 88% of our actions, while the conscious mind only has 12%.
So why is this important to understand?
Because if we are wanting to make a change in our life, what happens? We think with our conscious mind, I want to loose weight. So that is 12% of our mind saying okay cool we're going to loose weight this year.
But if the programming in our subconscious mind is that food is comfort, loosing weight is too hard, the gym is an uncomfortable place, well that is 88% of our mind completely contradicting everything we want for ourselves.
And I'm not great at math, but if you have 88% of your mind saying one thing, while 12% is saying that other, which do you think will win?
Your subconscious mind will will 100% of the time because youre brains only job is to keep you safe, keep you within your knowns and what you've always experienced in the past because everything else is unfamiliar and painful to it.
The subconscious mind runs on autopilot so even though we may be conscious that something isn't serving us, it's likely that because it's been coded into our subconsciousness, we'll keep doing it.
It's our subconscious mind that holds us back from achieving our goals and dreams. Most of what we think or do has been programmed by our subconscious since infancy—not conscious decisions. So it truly doesn't matter how deeply we consciously desire something, if that 88% is telling a different story, it will always win.
That's why making long lasting changes in our life is so hard! Because both parts of the mind are competing with each other.
Think about someone who looses 100 pounds, but then gains it all back. That's because they were able to push through the resistance enough to make the change. But their life script in their subconscious mind didn't change. So once they let their guard down and stopped being so intentional about their actions, their subconscious mind took over and fell right back into the same patterns.
That’s the subconscious mind at work—it is programmed to keep you safe and comfortable and the same, no matter the cost. So, when we try to stretch ourselves beyond our comfort zone, the subconscious mind will try to pull us back in.
How to get our subconscious mind to work for us instead of against us
So here's the deal, if you want to change, you need to get the 88% and the 12% telling the same story so that 100% of your mind is working towards your goal.
And how do we do that?
Well, the first step is recognizing if your subconscious beliefs are holding you back. And you can do that by taking a moment to reflect on your life. Are you constantly hitting roadblocks, feeling stuck in a never-ending loop? If so, it's probably time to dig deeper and address those underlying beliefs.
Okay then what?
We need to align our conscious and subconscious minds, allowing them to work together harmoniously. We reprogram our subconscious minds to have new knowns that align with the changes our conscious mind wants so that it can begin creating new patterns.
And how do we go about doing this?
Well, one of the most effective methods for accessing and reprogramming the subconscious mind is through hypnosis.
In hypnosis, we are able to quiet the critical mind and access the subconscious mind. From there, we can reprogram our unconscious patterns in order to break free from self-sabotage, build self-confidence, explore our relationship with ourselves and others, as well as increase productivity.
During hypnosis, we can use techniques to reprogram our subconscious, replacing those limiting beliefs with empowering ones. I like to use different techniques with my clients like visualizing themselves achieving their goals or simply reciting affirmations that are meant to imprint new beliefs into their subconscious mind.
In hypnosis, we can visualize receiving our desires, creating new knowns that align with what we truly want in life. It's like planting the seeds of success within our subconscious, nurturing them to grow and bloom.
How to change your life with hypnosis and subconscious reprogramming
The subconscious mind doesn't know the difference between reality and fantasty, so these moments that are created in hypnosis act as new knowns. And when we continue to strengthen those knowns within the mind by reinforcing them over and over again in hypnosis, the old knowns start to loose power and the new ones start to get stronger.
And because the brain will always gravitate towards it's knowns, it will start to gravitate towards these new thoughts, feelings, emotions, actions, and behaviors. And because of this, you'll start experiencing changes happening pretty easily and effortlessly because the resistance isn't there anymore.
Because think about it the reason that changes feel so hard is because the discrepancy between the subconscious mind and the conscious mind is creating resistance. One is saying one thing, and the other is saying something else. But when both are on the same page, there's no more resistance. So making the changes that you want because easier.
I mean, it's truly incredible! It's incredible to experience on myself with my own self hypnosis and seeing my own hypnotherapist. And it's incredible to see the changes that my clients are experiencing also.
It doesn't matter what we're working on, I always hear the same type of thing. I feel so much better about myself and my life and I don't really know how!
It's such an incredible tool, and it can help in so many different areas of your life.
I'm going to go more in depth about hypnosis in the next episode because there are 3 million different myths and falsities about it that freak people out. So tune in next week to learn more, because although I may be a little biased, I do really think you'll be fascinated. And inspired! I want to share this with people, because it's inspiring! Through hypnosis, you can access the depths of our minds in order to create new thought patterns and beliefs that serve us. You have the ability to break free from your limiting beliefs and create lasting change in all areas of life. Like what? Isn't that the secret we've all been searching for!?!
Kickstart the process of rewiring the subconscious mind
Anyway... I know that was a lot of information, but it's good background to have because it sets the foundation for everything I talk about. And having this understanding of the mind is crucial if you want to make any changes in your life, whether tangible or intangible!
